International Health Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

What is international health insurance?

International health insurance is specialist medical cover designed for individuals, families, and employees living, working, or travelling abroad. It helps provide access to private healthcare, medical treatment, hospital care, and emergency support worldwide.

International health insurance is suitable for expatriates, business travellers, overseas workers, remote employees, digital nomads, and individuals relocating abroad. It is also valuable for companies with employees working internationally.

International health insurance can include cover for inpatient and outpatient treatment, emergency medical care, hospital stays, specialist consultations, surgery, prescription medication, cancer treatment, mental health support, and medical evacuation depending on the policy.

Yes. Most international health insurance policies provide cover for emergency medical treatment overseas, including hospital admissions, ambulance transport, emergency surgery, and urgent medical care while outside your home country.

Medical evacuation cover helps arrange and pay for emergency transport to the nearest suitable medical facility or repatriation to your home country if adequate treatment is not available locally. This is particularly important for individuals working in remote or high-risk regions.

Some international health insurance providers may offer cover for pre-existing medical conditions, depending on the condition, underwriting assessment, and policy terms. In some cases, exclusions or additional premiums may apply.

Yes. Travel insurance is generally designed for short trips and emergency situations, while international health insurance provides longer-term medical cover for people living or working abroad. International policies often include more comprehensive healthcare benefits and ongoing treatment cover.

Yes. Many employers offer international private medical insurance as part of employee benefits packages for staff working overseas. Group policies can help businesses support employee wellbeing while ensuring access to quality healthcare abroad.

The cost of international health insurance depends on factors such as age, destination country, level of cover, medical history, policy excess, and whether additional benefits such as dental or maternity cover are included.

Healthcare costs can be extremely expensive in some countries, and access to quality treatment may vary significantly. International health insurance provides financial protection, access to private healthcare, and peace of mind for individuals and businesses operating overseas.
