Protect your fleet over they summer and beyond
As we continue through the Summer, the change in temperature and rainfall can affect our vehicles. If you own or run a company using multiple vehicles, it is likely something at some point will break down. To help mitigate these issues, always make sure to check for these 6 things over the summer to keep your operations running smoothly.
Tyres
As the condition of your vehicles tyres will be one of the biggest safety concerns for your fleet, after all this is the only part of your vehicle that touches the road, it is vital that they are ready for summer.
It is important to ensure that all vehicles that have been put onto winter tyres are returned to summer tyres, the grip that winter tyres provide during the warmer weather it has greatly reduced.
Air conditioning
This is just to ensure that your drivers are as comfortable and aware as possible during the long hours on the road during the summer.
A common cause of air conditioning failing is that they need “regassing” or contain a low level of refrigerant. A straightforward fix for most garages but if left unmonitored and a fault develops the unit can be a pricey repair.
Oil
Before your drivers set off on their summer routes, it is best to keep an eye on their vehicles’ oil levels. Depending on the vehicle, this can be monitored manually with a dipstick, through electronic monitoring or through telematics.
It is generally advised to change a vehicle’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles for conventional oil and 5,000 to 6,000 miles for synthetics and to check the oil even more regularly. However if your vehicles regularly make long journeys carrying heavy loads, this will need to be scheduled more frequently.
Coolant
During summer, it is vital that the correct mix of coolant and that the correct levels are kept. Coolant changes are usually included in a vehicles service to keep your vehicles warranty in place. However, during hot weather its best practice to check them regularly.
Brakes
Brakes can be left damaged by the drastic weather change causing cracks, warping and general wear and tear. Checking brakes during a service should be a priority, but it is a good idea for the driver/fleet manager to be vigilant about the condition of their brakes.

Insurance is a legal requirement for your vehicle if they are to be used on public roads. Make sure to shop around in the months running up to your renewal date to find the best premiums and make sure you’re covered in all the areas you need
