4 Aug Latest News

Today, the SJL Foundation’s annual SJL Business Awards has launched for businesses to start entering. Entrepreneurs aged 18 and over can apply to become one of five finalists to pitch to four judges in the House of Commons on Wednesday 2 November 2022. Winners will be awarded a business grant of £2,000 or more, one year’s free mentoring and free publicity to increase their credibility.

To enter the competition, people should email ku.oc.sniljsnull@noitadnuof and ask for an application pack. They will then be emailed an application form with 8 questions and each entrant must also submit a three-minute video of themselves saying what their business does, and how they’d spend the grant.  The closing date for entries is 12pm noon on 12 September 2022.

The four judges are:

  • Simon Lancaster, trustee of the SJL Foundation, owner and CEO of SJL Insurance Services
  • Kerry Hopkins, owner of broadcast public relations agency the Broadcast Academy
  • Maisha Frost, business editor of the Daily Express newspaper
  • Annabel Kaye, founder of legal advice company KoffeeKlatch

MP Robin Walker, the MP for Worcester is hosting the morning reception at the House of Commons on behalf of the SJL Foundation.

Simon Lancaster, founder of the SJL Foundation said: “The annual SJL Business Awards are put on to help our foundation achieve our purpose of paying it forward to help other entrepreneurs. We are entering a tough time for businesses what with the rise of inflation, higher taxes and increased costs. But that does not mean a business can’t succeed right now which is what mentoring from SJL’s senior staff and my associates aims to help the winners achieve.”

It is compulsory for all finalists to travel to the House of Commons ready for a 07:15am arrival at the House of Commons on Wednesday 2 November 2022 and the event finishes at 10am.
